THE ONE JOINS WHISKY WORLD ELITE – Whisky News

The ONE 1

THE ONE JOINS WHISKY WORLD ELITE

The first ever blend of whiskies from around the British Isles, The ONE, has been classified as one of the best blended whiskies in the world less than a year after launch.

The prestigious International Wine Spirit Competition (IWSC) revealed its 2014 winners awarding the blend, produced by The Lakes Distillery, the Silver Legend in the Worldwide Whiskey category. Silver marks The ONE as ‘fine example, excellent quality’.

The annual awards are an industry-noted mark of quality and excellence and are recognised worldwide. Spirits from nearly 90 countries are entered into the competition with only those of the highest quality receiving recognition. Entries are scored out of 100 and undergo a detailed level of scrutiny including technical and chemical analysis, blind tastings and colour.

Paul Currie, founder and managing director of The Lakes Distillery, said on the win: “The IWSC sets the international benchmark for quality and we are delighted that The ONE has been included.

“The ONE, which combines the finest whiskies from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England, is now listed alongside the wine and spirit world’s top brands, which is where we feel it deserves to be.”

The award comes weeks after The Lakes Distillery announced luxury retailer Harvey Nichols as its first UK-wide retailer of The ONE, which was launched in September 2013. Distribution deals have also been confirmed in The Netherlands, France, Belgium and The UAE, with Spain and Denmark to be announced by the end of the year and many more countries poised to come on board next year, including the USA.

Production is set to start this summer on The Lakes Distillery’s whisky, gin and vodka, while its bistro, tours and shop will open to the public by December 2014.

A select number of whisky enthusiasts around the world are invited to become part of the early stages of The Lakes Distillery story. The company has launched a Connoisseurs’ Club, where just 60 members can come to the distillery to make their own whisky, fill their own rare sherry cask, and then come to annual tasting ceremonies when they can taste their maturing whisky.

In addition, the Lakes Distillery will set aside the first 100 casks of malt whisky produced exclusively for members of its Founders’ Club. Each year for ten years, members will then receive one 70cl bottle and two tasting bottles, making up a collectible set of the distillery’s first ever production.

More information is available at http://www.lakesdistillery.com

Notes

The ONE is also available to buy online at http://www.lakesdistillery.com/shop/

The Lakes Distillery

Close to Bassenthwaite Lake, in an area of unimaginable beauty encircled by Cumbrian fells, is the perfect home for the first-ever Lakes Distillery.

The experienced team behind the Lakes Distillery, which includes managing director Paul Currie who co founded the Arran Distillery, Master Distiller Chris Anderson, ex Dewars with over 30 years’ experience, and Alan Rutherford a former Production Director of Diageo, are renovating the historic buildings of an old Victorian Model Farm next to the famous river Derwent and close to Bassenthwaite Lake, with the aim to produce a new world-class single malt whisky.

The water from the famous River Derwent, with its source high up in the fells, a team steeped in whisky experience, and perfect conditions for distilling are set to create a very special malt.

The Lakes Distillery will open to the public in late 2014. The Lakes single malt will begin production this summer, and its blended whisky from the British Isles, called The ONE, is available to buy now.

The ONE Whisky

The ONE is the first British blended whisky ever to be produced.  As opposed to blends made only of scotch whiskies, The ONE has been carefully created from whiskies from around the British Isles, leading to a very unique whisky. This is very much an artisan blend – the team in Cumbria has enormous experience in making the very finest whiskies, and their expertise has put together this outstanding blend, which has a lightly peated character.

Blended whiskies are made up of grain and malt whiskies, and it is the quantity of malt whisky in the blend that dictates the quality – so the more malt whisky in the blend, the better the quality. The ONE has a very high malt content and its quality is very much in line with single malt whiskies.

The Connoisseurs’ Club

The company has launched a  Connoisseurs’ Club, offering the opportunity for just 60 members to own their own very rare cask of The Lakes Malt.

Each cask is estimated to contain more than 100 bottles and members can be there on that historic first day to make the whisky themselves, fill their own Connoisseur’s Cask and see it stored in the distillery warehouse. The Connoisseurs’ Club limited membership costs £12,000, which includes the unique signature cask, exclusive annual events, accommodation at the nearby 4-star Trout Hotel, delivery, all duty and VAT. It’s estimated if kept, the cask will be worth over £20,000 in years to come.

The Founders’ Club

The first ever distillery in the beautiful Lake District, opening later this year, is setting aside the first ever 100 casks of malt whisky produced for members of its Founders’ Club.

Each year for ten years, members will receive one 70cl bottle plus two tasting miniatures of the maturing malt, making up a collectible set of the distillery’s first ever production, all with unique, limited edition labels. These casks will not be available for the general public and are uniquely reserved for members.

Founders’ Club membership costs just £595, with an expected value of over £1,400 over the ten years period. Delivery of the first bottle will be in 2015.

Ardbeg 1972 (Douglas Laing OMC)

This is not the legendary Ardbeg 1972 ‘Ardbeggeddon’ for the Plowed society, but a similar release by Douglas Laing in their Old Malt Cask series, bottled a couple of months earlier in August 2001. It was finished in a sherry cask for six months before being bottled.

Ardbeg 1972/2001 29yo DL OMCArdbeg 1972/2001 29yo DL OMCArdbeg 29 yo 1972 (50%, Douglas Laing OMC 2001, sherry finish, 432 btl.)

Nose: marvellous, a great mix of gentle old peat, spearmint, asphalt and a Brora-esk farminess (stables) in the background, although this fades away. Constantly balancing between a fat (vanilla) creaminess and maritime sharpness. Tarry ropes and sweet seaweed. Smoked bacon. Some diesel. Very rich and classy, and certainly lifted by the sherry notes. Mouth: a marriage of peat and sweet sherry again. Honey, some brown sugar and toast. Apples again. Then back to seaweed and saltwater. Hints of coal tar soap and sweet rubber. Candied liquorice. Lime and lemon candy, slowly fading to sugared grapefruit juice. Very subtle oak. Finish: very long, smoky and slowly drying.

Wonderful whisky, like most Ardbeg 1972’s in fact. I swallowed the last drop more than half an hour ago and I’m still vividly enjoying the aftertaste. In stock at The Whisky Exchange, around € 1500.

Score: 94/100

Kilchoman 2009 PX Finish Single Cask Abbey Whisky Exclusive – Scotch Whisky News

Kilchoman 2009 PX Finish Single Cask AW Exclusive

To say we’re excited would be a huge understatement! Our very own cask of Kilchoman; and boy, it’s a beaut!

Established in 2005, Kilchoman distillery holds true to tradition, it’s one of only a handful of distilleries to still practice floor maltings; they even grow their own barley! We’ve always greatly admired Islay’s farm distillery and what it stands for, so to team up and release this wonderful dram makes us incredibly proud indeed!

Cask #285/09 has been matured for over four and a half years in a fresh bourbon barrel before being transferred to a Pedro Ximénez cask for a further four months maturation. The PX finish on this release works a treat, softening things down a little but still allowing the dram to hold the traditional taste characteristics you would expect from a Kilchoman whisky of this age. A perfect combination.

Single cask #285/09 has been bottled at cask strength, 58.3% vol with 270 bottles filled.

Images of Ayrshire (Malts of Scotland)

Malts of Scotland

Malts of ScotlandThe last time this blog featured the independent bottler Malts of Scotland was exactly one year ago. Somehow they weren’t brought to my attention, but I’m happy to have tasted a couple of new releases again.

Images is a relatively new series. The distilleries aren’t mentioned on the label because most casks were intended for the blending industry. However each bottle bears a characteristic image of the production region and this is sometimes enough to narrow down the possibilities.

Ayrshire doesn’t have a lot of active distilleries and the link with Ailsa Bay was easily made. It’s a recent distillery, owned by William Grant, operational since September 2007 and housed within the Girvan site. The distillery produces unpeated, mildly peated and heavily peated whisky, all used for blending. This Images of Ayrshire may well be the first single malt release from Ailsa Bay!

Images releases are usually bottled at 53,2% but this time it’s kept at cask strength, a whopping 68,3%.

Images of Ayrshire - Malts of ScotlandImages of Ayrshire - Malts of ScotlandImages of Ayrshire ‘Dairymple Bridge’ 3 yo (68,3%, Malts of Scotland 2014, sherry hogshead, 328 btl.)

Nose: aromatic, young, raisiny sherry. Pretty fierce at first, even with some water, but nice. Raisins, candied apple, oranges, raspberry and a few winey / rummy undertones. Fresh red plums. Pecan nuts and hints of tobacco in the background. Mouth: sweet and highly oak-driven. Juicy fruits but also loads of spices (pepper, vanilla, clove). Kirsch and marinated raisins. Underneath seems to be a heavy, slightly meaty spirit. Mexican chocolate and toffee. Dry tannins as well. Finish: long, with chocolate, raisins and a spicy heat.

It’s easy to see similarities with young Glenfarclas, sherried Arran or Glenmorangie Sonnalta. In fact, it reminds me of any clean spirit in a great sherry cask, if not for the added weight on the palate. Relatively low complexity but an intense, interesting dram. Around € 80.

Score: 86/100

The BenRiach Distillery Company Wins 11 Medals in the 2014 International Wine and Spirits Competition – Scotch Whisky News

Glenglassaugh 30 Years Old

THE BenRiach Distillery Company has won 11 medals, including two Gold Outstanding medals, across its three brands at this year’s International Wine and Spirits Competition.

Founded in 1969, the International Wine and Spirit Competition is one of the most prestigious in the world. It exists to award excellence to wines and spirits worldwide, encouraging consumer and trade recognition for quality products. Judging for the Competition is unique in that it has two stages; first, the products are tasted blind by expert panels, selected from over 300 fully experienced and qualified industry judges. Then, products which receive the top medals are subject to technical analysis before results are released; this crucial stage ensures winners receive complete validation.

The company’s full list of awards is:

  • Gold Medal – Outstanding           BenRiach 12 Years Old
  • Gold Medal – Outstanding           Glenglassaugh 30 Years Old
  • Gold Medal                                        Glenglassaugh 40 Years Old
  • Silver Medal – Outstanding         BenRiach 17YO Septendecim
  • Silver Medal – Outstanding         BenRiach 15YO Pedro Ximenez Finish
  • Silver Medal – Outstanding         BenRiach 10YO Curiositas
  • Silver Medal – Outstanding         GlenDronach 15YO Revival
  • Silver Medal – Outstanding         GlenDronach 18YO Allardice
  • Silver Medal – Outstanding         Glenglassaugh Torfa
  • Silver Medal                                      Glenglassaugh Evolution
  • Silver Medal                                      Glenglassaugh Revival

The judges described the Glenglassaugh 30 Years Old, winner of a Gold Outstanding medal, as; “A complex fruity and spicy whisky with dried fruit and raisins, aromatic pipe tobacco and a spicy oaky mouth feel. Some fine vanilla toffee with a long spicy finish.”

The BenRiach 12 Years Old impressed the competition’s judges with: “Currant buns, a light whisky with hints of raisins and sultanas, spicy citrus fruits and a lightly waxy mouth feel. A very well balanced spicy finish.”

And notes of “Fine spices in a great nose of chocolate, liquorice and vanilla toffee aromas. Lovely wood phenols and well balanced tannins, sandalwood and nutmeg tones in a long lasting aftertaste”, resulted in a Gold Medal for the Glenglassaugh 40 Years Old.

BenRiach’s Sales Director Alistair Walker said: “We are delighted to win these awards, especially as they are spread across all three of our brands. A number of these products are relatively new releases, such as the Glenglassaugh 30 Years Old, 40 Years Old and Torfa, so it is nice to see them getting some industry recognition. To receive a Gold Outstanding Medal for the BenRiach 12 Years Old is also particularly satisfying as it is one of our core range expressions. It’s a major achievement for a small independent to make the UK spirits producer shortlist and we are thrilled with these results.”
