The Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, where Ballantine’s has also been an official sponsor since 2007, attracts world class talent to its links courses, just miles away from the spiritual home of Ballantine’s, Glenburgie Distillery.

Chivas Regal Launches First New Blend Since 2007: New Chivas Regal Extra Takes Luxury Whisky to the Next Level – Scotch Whisky News

Chivas New

October 2014: Today, Chivas Regal, the world’s first luxury whisky, introduces Chivas Regal Extra — its first new global expression since 2007*. Complementing its collection of premium blended Scotch whiskies, Chivas Regal Extra is one of the richest, most generous tasting blends within this category, crafted for those who look for more.

Taking Chivas Regal’s famous, award-winning house style to a new taste experience, Chivas Regal Extra continues the legacy of founding brothers James and John Chivas, who pioneered and excelled in the art of blending whiskies in the 19th Century. Blending whisky for 25 years, Colin Scott, Chivas Regal Master Blender has created a unique and outstanding blended Scotch using some of the rarest malt whiskies from the Chivas inventory.

Chivas Regal Extra is a special selection of whiskies matured in Oloroso sherry casks together with the rarest and finest Chivas malts, creating a rich and generous Chivas blend, for those who look for more. The result? An incredibly rich and discerning interpretation of the Chivas signature style, Chivas Regal Extra has a fruity, sweet nose with notes of ripe pears, creamy toffee and a hint of ginger. The ripe pears continue on the palate, with sweet tropical flavours of melons and soft notes of vanilla and caramel, blending with spicy notes of cinnamon and hints of almonds, leading to a long and fulfilling finish.

“This is our first new global expression since 2007.” explains Colin Scott, Master Blender at Chivas Regal. “The mark of its quality lies in its rich and generous taste which we’ve created by using some of our rarest whiskies built on a rich foundation of malts that have been matured in a higher proportion of sherry casks. This process delivers a profound depth of flavour and a whisky that showcases the character of this unique blend, taking it to a whole new level.”

Max Warner, Global Brand Ambassador for Chivas Regal, has developed a series of ‘Fortified Classics’ cocktails using the richer flavours of other fortified spirits such as Lillet, Sherry and Port. The line of cocktails takes inspiration from some of the world’s most famous classic cocktails, such as the ‘Rob Roy,’ to complement nuances of nutty sweetness, spiciness and a deep rich amber colour of Chivas Regal Extra. For recipes, visit: http://www.chivas.com/en/int/chivas-regal-extra/mixology/  Chivas Regal Extra will be stocked at whisky retailers around the world plus other specialist spirits merchants.-

HAIG CLUB opens its doors to the world “Global arrival of new Single Grain Whisky welcomes in a new era for Scotch” – Scotch Whisky News

Haig Club

HAIG CLUB opens its doors to the world

Global arrival of new Single Grain Whisky welcomes in a new era for Scotch

Forget everything you thought you knew about Scotch”

Dave Broom, whisky writer

EDINBURGH, October 6, 2014. Diageo, a global leader in beverage alcohol, today announced the worldwide launch of its new Single Grain Scotch Whisky, HAIG CLUB™.

The distinctive and sophisticated new whisky, developed in partnership with global icon David Beckham and British entrepreneur Simon Fuller will now be available in bars, restaurants and retail stores in the United Kingdom and rolling out in the next few weeks in China, South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States, expanding to additional markets in the near future. The brand will also now be available in duty free shops globally following its exclusive release period in the UK and a limited number of duty free stores earlier this year.

“HAIG CLUB™ is designed to be different,” said Kathy Parker, Senior Vice President, HAIG CLUB™. “Historically Single Grain Whisky has been in the shadow of Single Malts and Blended Scotch, but HAIG CLUB™ represents a new direction in Scotch Whisky, which brings Single Grain Scotch to the forefront.

This is a whisky that welcomes in a new era for Scotch. The rise of Single Grain Whisky has been both predicted and eagerly anticipated by whisky experts in recent years and with HAIG CLUB™ we are thrilled to give this ‘hidden gem’ the attention and appreciation it deserves.”

Crafted at Scotland’s oldest grain whisky distillery – Cameronbridge in Fife – HAIG CLUB™ is built on heritage but designed for the modern world. The House of Haig can trace its whisky producing roots back to the seventeenth century, making the Haig family Scotland’s oldest grain whisky dynasty.

Parker continued, “Working with partners like David Beckham and Simon Fuller has brought a new perspective to what we do, helping us to break new ground. Both David and Simon are renowned for shaking up every sector in which they work and this has been no exception. We believe that people around the world are going to love what we’ve created together – we can’t wait for them to try it.”

The contemporary appearance of the square HAIG CLUB™ bottle draws on a history of innovative bottles produced by the House of Haig. The blue glass bottle was inspired by the tradition of blenders using blue tasting glasses so the spirit can be reviewed on aroma and taste alone.

The unique flavours of the whisky itself are created by master blender Chris Clark carefully selecting mature whisky from Refill, American Oak and Rejuvenated casks producing a stunning Single Grain Scotch Whisky with a fresh, clean style showcasing butterscotch-smooth tropical fruit and unexpected, spicy backing harmonies. HAIG CLUB™ is a whisky crafted to appeal to people who are new to whisky and whisky connoisseurs alike.

“I am incredibly proud to have been part of the creation of HAIG CLUB™,” said David Beckham. “I think we have made something really special. For me it has meant understanding how whisky is made and enjoyed and then working with some incredible people to write a new chapter for Haig.”

Responsible drinking is at the core of HAIG CLUB™, with David Beckham supporting the brand’s philosophy of quality over quantity. David said, “I appreciate a well-made drink and I like to take my time and enjoy it – I try to drink better, not more.”

To celebrate the global launch of HAIG CLUB™ David Beckham and business partner Simon Fuller hosted an exclusive HAIG CLUB™ weekend in the heart of Scotland on the outskirts of Edinburgh. Attended by Victoria Beckham, and other guests, the weekend gave Beckham and Fuller the opportunity to personally introduce friends both old and new to the whisky and the brand that they have helped create.

Simon Fuller commented, “This is a great partnership between one of the world’s most iconic stars and a company that is a true leader in the global sprits industry. Now we can all celebrate together as HAIG CLUB™ is launched worldwide and can be enjoyed by everyone!”

Welcome to HAIG CLUB™. Enjoy Responsibly.

The Could-Be-True Story of Ballantine’s: New and Compelling Film Content Brings Ballantine’s Stay True Story to Life – With a Unique Twist!

Europe’s No.1 whisky releases humorous new film to reveal what could have happened if Ballantine’s history had taken an unexpected and alternative route through the years…

Ballantine’s is today announcing the launch of a new digital campaign that aims to highlight to its fans around the world both its vibrant personality and its commitment to staying true to itself throughout its near 200 year history.

Conceived and created by MC Saatchi London, the campaign goes live with the release of two films; The Could-Be-True Story and The Stay True Story, both of which can be viewed at www.YouTube.com/Ballantines. The Could-Be-True Story first takes the viewer through Ballantine’s impressive heritage in an unexpected and humorous way, illustrating what could have happened had Ballantine’s not stayed true to founder George Ballantine’s vision. The Stay True Story of Ballantine’s then supports and complements the lead ‘Could-Be-True’ film, recounting Ballantine’s true brand story and demonstrating the ways in which the brand actually has stayed true since its creation in 1827.

The films will be seeded on Ballantine’s global social media platforms and further amplified in key markets around the world. The launch will also be supported by a media outreach programme that aims to grab the attention of relevant bloggers and media in a humorous and unique manner.

This new campaign is the latest in a series of successful marketing initiatives from Ballantine’s, which has seen the brand make a concerted effort to connect with consumers through digital media. This consumer engagement strategy is paying off, with Ballantine’s showing a strong performance* in key markets such as South Africa (109% annual growth), Brazil (51% annual growth), India (18% annual growth), and Poland (13% annual growth).

Ballantine’s Global Brand Director, Peter Moore, comments: “As a brand that prides itself on its reputation for innovation, we have long understood the potential that engaging, digital content provides, allowing us to connect with independent-minded adults. With these new films, we’re aiming to tell the story of Ballantine’s in a surprising and light-hearted manner, and one that is unexpected of a Scotch whisky brand. We are hopeful that this approach will capture the attention of our audience, showing them that whilst Ballantine’s is a well-established brand with a long history of tradition, we have a sense of humour and an individual style, making us a brand that remains relevant today.”

Auchentoshan® Single Malt Lowland Scotch Whisky Introduces Auchentoshan® American Oak – Scotch Whisky News

Auchentoshan® Single Malt Lowland Scotch Whisky Introduces Auchentoshan® American Oak

Glasgow, Scotland (October 7, 2014) – Auchentoshan® Single Malt Lowland Scotch Whisky known for triple distilling every single drop, introduces Auchentoshan® American Oak. Releasing flavor layers of vanilla, caramelized sugars, coconut and oak spices, Auchentoshan American Oak is the first ever Auchentoshan to be matured exclusively in first fill ex bourbon casks. The name harkens to the 100 year old oak trees (of the Quercus alba species) grown in the North American mountains which become bourbon casks that will eventually age Auchentoshan Scotch Whisky’s newest expression. Auchentoshan American Oak will become a permanent member of the core Auchentoshan portfolio, which includes 12 Years Old and Three Wood. Auchentoshan American Oak is available nationwide with a suggested retail price of $39.99/750ml.

Auchentoshan is Always Triple Distilled
Auchentoshan prides itself in its unique tradition of triple distilling every single drop. This means that the spirit produced reaches 81.5% alcohol by volume, significantly higher than most single malt whisky distilleries in Scotland. The lightness of the liquid enables it to more readily absorb every characteristic it is exposed to in the cask.

American Oak Maturation
Auchentoshan creates a smooth and complex spirit that ages beautifully in first fill ex-bourbon casks. The North American oak barrels used for American Oak maturation are first seasoned with American bourbon whiskey, which serves to remove the harsher bitter oak tannins and break down the oak to re lease even more vanilla, coconut and silky maturation oils.

Judicious Cask Selection
The maturing Auchentoshan spirit is regularly sampled by Rachel Barrie, Auchentoshan Master Blender, drawing hundreds of samples from different positions in the warehouse. Auchentoshan has found that higher positions in the warehouse promote more spice and intense bourbon vanilla extraction from the oak, whereas casks matured nearer ground level promote softer peach and citrus fruit top notes and silky coconut. Barrie hand selects the casks that are then married together for several months to achieve a multi-layered balance of vanilla sweetness, clean citrus scent and a refreshingly smooth taste.

With a nod to its triple distillation and American oak maturation, Auchentoshan American Oak presents several cocktails where American Oak can be used as a delicious substitute:

Make it a Triple | Riff on a cocktail that is typically made with Irish whiskey, Auchentoshan American Oak works well because of its triple distillation.

  • 1 oz. Auchentoshan® American Oak Single Malt Scotch Whisky
  • .25 oz. Lillet® Vermouth
  • .25 oz. Pierre Ferrand® Dry Curacao
  • 2 Dashes Orange Bitters

Stir all ingredients together and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with lemon peel.

Seelbach | A pre-prohibition cocktail famously made with bourbon, Auchentoshan American Oak works well here because of its bourbon barrel maturation.

  • 1 oz. Auchentoshan® American Oak Single Malt Scotch Whisky
  • .25 oz. Pierre Ferrand® Dry Curacao
  • 7 dashes Angostura® Bitters
  • 7 dashes Peychaud’s® Bitters
  • .25 oz. Champagne

Stir ingredients over ice, strain into a chilled flute, top with Champagne and lemon twist garnish.

Triple A | Punch created by Julieta Campos of The Berkshire Room, Chicago.

  • 1 oz. Auchentoshan® American Oak Single Malt Scotch Whisky
  • .25 oz. Ginger Syrup
  • .5 oz. Lemon Juice
  • .25 oz. Apricot Liqueur
  • .25 oz. Aperol® Aperitif

Serve in tumbler/punch cup. Top with a few Maldon® salt flakes.

TASTING NOTES: Auchentoshan American Oak Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 40% ABV
To the eye:  Bright gold.
To the nose:  Bourbon vanilla and coconut with layers of zesty citrus fruit.

Scotch Whiskymaker Compass Box Releases Smoky Sherried Sibling to the Award-Winning Great King Street Artist’s Blend – Scotch Whisky News

    AA GKS Smoky

Scotch Whiskymaker Compass Box Releases Smoky Sherried Sibling to the Award-Winning Great King Street Artist’s Blend

There is no Blended Scotch whisky quite like this.”

John Glaser – Compass Box Founder Whiskymaker

GLASGOW BLEND is the second permanent whisky to be introduced to the Great King Street range of innovative, small-batch Blended Scotch whiskies from Compass Box.

Glasgow Blend will be available from mid-October in UK and Europe, and from November 1st onwards in the US, North America and all key international Compass Box markets. It will be priced at around £30 in the UK and €36 in Europe for a 50cl format (with stylish red gift tube), and $45 and $25 in the US for the 750ml and 375ml formats respectively (without a gift tube).

The Great King Street range is dedicated to applying a contemporary approach to the creation of Blended Scotch Whiskies in the full-flavoured style of the late 19th century blending houses. To this, they lend a 21st century sense of exploration and innovation for which Compass Box is known. The range takes its name from 24 Great King Street, the company’s registered address in Edinburgh since John Glaser started the business in 2000. Great King Street Scotch whiskies lend themselves to a variety of usages—they can be enjoyed neat, with ice and a splash of water, served as a classic Highball, or as a key ingredient in cocktails.

John Glaser adds, “Over a year in the making, the ‘Glasgow Blend’ involved the creation of over 100 recipe prototypes before we finalised it. We’ve been trying to make a Blended Scotch whisky like no other on the market today, something based on the traditional Scotch whisky styles of peatiness and sherry cask aging, but reinterpreted for today’s drinkers who seek out big flavours, complexity and fullness on the palate.  This is full-on Blended Scotch whisky, in all its sherry-aged, peaty glory, classic in style, updated for today with its flavour intensity and sweetness – part owing to the grain whiskies, part owing to the small amount of French oak finished malt.  There is no Blended Scotch Whisky quite like this.”

In his 1930 book ‘Whisky’, Aeneas MacDonald mentions that Glaswegians historically preferred fuller bodied and more flavour-packed whiskies than people in other parts of the world. So what better name for a whisky such as this? For decades, The Wellington Statue, outside Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art, has been cheekily topped by a traffic cone, something the local population has taken to heart as a symbol of their sense of humour. It has become one of Glasgow’s most iconic images, and graces the label for the Glasgow Blend.

    ABOUT GLASGOW BLEND

Glasgow Blend has been created to provide a very different expression of the Great King Street house style. While the whiskies share the same moreishness, creaminess and approachability, Artist’s Blend is fruity, spicy and packed with vanilla, while Glasgow Blend is rich, round smoky and sherried. Glasgow Blend offers a rich vein of peaty-smokiness underpinned by sherry cask-aged whiskies full of dried fruit and wine character.  The palate is full and round, with a sweetness typical of whiskies from Comapss Box. It is made from approximately 67% malt whisky from the regions of Islay, the Highlands and Speyside and 33% Lowland grain whisky from a Fife distillery. It is aged in a combination of first-fill Sherry casks, first-fill and refill ex-Bourbon barrels with a small portion of new French oak finishing. It is bottled at the traditional bottling strength of 43%, is not chill-filtered and is a natural colour..

Whisky innovators Compass Box release The Lost Blend Limited Edition as a homage to their own long lost whisky – Scotch Whisky News

    AA Lost Blend

Whisky innovators Compass Box release The Lost Blend Limited Edition as a homage to their own long lost whisky

Yes, sir, the stuff was distilled elixir of battle, money and high life.”

From The Lost Blend by O. Henry, 1907

For the first time, three different front labels adorn the front of the same whisky.

THE LOST BLEND is the new limited edition release from award-winning Scotch Whiskymaker Compass Box. This marriage of three single malts is a homage to their long lost (and much loved) Eleuthera whisky, and boasts the same unique smoky fruity style. After 10 years of searching, whiskymaker John Glaser was finally able to track down the unique whiskies he required earlier this year. The result is The Lost Blend. Bottled at 46% and packaged in a high quality gift box adorned with ‘lost items,’ it will be priced at $120 in the US, £85 in the UK and $100 in Europe. It will be available from 1st October in the US, UK, Europe and all key international Compass Box markets.

John Glaser adds, “In 2001, we created our first single malt blend which we called Eleuthera. It was an elegant marriage of approximately 80% unpeated Highland and 20% peaty Islay single malts. Alas, after 3 years, we were suddenly no longer able to obtain one of the key whiskies required for the recipe so, sadly, we retired Eleuthera in 2004. Quietly, I have been looking for whiskies that we could use to bring it back, even if temporarily, but without any luck. Until now.”

Glaser has had a name that he’s been waiting to use for a whisky project like this—The Lost Blend, inspired by the O. Henry story of the same name.  This sharp and witty portrait of life in a New York bar in the early 1900s was published in 1907 and features two business partners who try to recreate a blend of different spirits with close to supernatural properties.

Compass Box has created three different front label designs all around the same theme: lost items. These include an antique nautical octant, a Woodstock typewriter, an Excelsior cylinder gramophone, the tragically lost RMS Lusitania, and of course the Dodo. The whisky behind each label is the same, and the three labels have been randomly bottled and put into cases, which allows customers an additional discovery to the whisky itself:  which label did I get?

    ABOUT THE LOST BLEND

This elegantly complex whisky is a union of rare old Highland single malts and a delicious peaty Islay single malt. An ethereal fruit and herbal character and a sweetness on the palate is buttressed by an underlying smokiness. Single malt whisky (of a certain age) from the Clynelish distillery, and a small cache of extraordinary whisky from the Allt-A-Bhainne distillery, aged in American oak barrels and just a few years shy of two decades old, is combined with malt whisky from the Caol Ila distillery. Bottled at 46% this limited edition of 12,018 bottles was bottled in August 2014. It is not chill-filtered and is natural colour..

BOWMORE® SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY INTRODUCES BOWMORE® SMALL BATCH – Scotch Whisky News

BOWMORE® SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY INTRODUCES

    BOWMORE® SMALL BATCH

The Taste of Islay encapsulated in Bowmore® Scotch Whisky’s latest addition to its core range

Islay, Scotland  (October 9, 2014) – Bowmore, the first distillery on Islay established in 1779, is proud to introduce its latest expression – Bowmore® Small Batch Single Malt Scotch Whisky – a perfect and accessible embodiment of the Taste of Islay. The distillery has used its centuries-long experience to create a perfect combination of flavors that encapsulate Scotch from Islay, known as the Queen of the Hebrides.

Exclusively matured in first and second-fill ex-bourbon casks, Small Batch evokes the Islay house character of gentle peat smoke, salt, citrus and vanilla. Considered by many to be among the most well-balanced whiskies, Bowmore Small Batch makes for a wonderful dram for those wanting to experience an Islay single malt.

Rachel Barrie, Morrison Bowmore Distillers Master Blender, says, “If I could select only one dram to transport an enthusiast to Islay, it would be Small Batch. No one liquid better showcases the tranquility and elegance of the Island.”

Crafted from two different types of bourbon cask which are married together, Small Batch exhibits the best qualities of both: First-fill ex-bourbon casks imparts a delicious vanilla sweetness, subtle spices and a bourbon-style oak smoke, created by charring of the barrel in the bourbon production process. The second-fill ex-bourbon casks impart fruit and salty flavors which enhance Bowmore Scotch Whisky’s fresh fruity complexity and its trademark honey and creamy malt character. The result is a single malt that is exceptionally balanced between salt and sweetness. Visit here to watch a short animation about the making of Bowmore Small Batch.

Bowmore Small Batch is available nationwide in the US now and will be released globally as well. It will be a permanent addition to the Bowmore core range of Scotch whiskies and will retail for a suggested $39.99/750ml.

    THE BOWMORE DISTILLERY

Founded in 1779, Bowmore is the oldest Distillery on Islay. Islay malts are famous for their characteristic smokiness and Bowmore is no exception. Bowmore carefully smokes its malt and uses skills handed down from generation to generation to craft a perfectly balanced single malt.  Bowmore’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of its single malts – they are one of only a few distilleries anywhere which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by traditional wooden malt shovels. It draws water from the Laggan River, with its rich peaty overtones, and it’s the same Islay peat that fires the malt drying kiln.

Bowmore Distillery’s close proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of the spirit. The famous Bowmore No. 1 Vaults is where most of the whiskies spend their time resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the Vault’s sea-facing wall. They mature in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry or claret, gradually developing rich and mellow flavors. It’s this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people and tradition that together create the perfectly balanced warm and smoky character of Bowmore single malt whiskies.
