New Scotch and Bourbon Study Certification Program Announced

The Council of Whiskey Masters in Los Angeles is introducing a dedicated certification program for whiskey. Two separate Level 1 tracks, Certified Scotch Professional (CSP) and Certified Bourbon Professional (CBP), are now open for student enrollment.

While several organizations have offered credentialing programs for spirits, no specialized and rigorous self study program has been available globally for Scotch or Bourbon, nor for whiskey in general. The market gap to offer a credential program that can gain the same industry trust as the leading wine and sommelier certifications can hereby be filled.

With growing interest for Scotch and Bourbon, beverage professionals and hobbyist can formalize their dedication to whiskey through a demanding study and examination program, from anywhere in the world.

Candidates enrolled in the CSP or CBP programs (Level 1) receive a detailed 100-page study guide to prepare for the exam. The exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, with an exam time of 1 hour. Passing grade is 80%. Exam dates are offered 4 times a year in local exam centers everywhere in the United States, Europe and Canada. Candidates receive a diploma and a lapel pin upon passing the exam, and may carry the corresponding postnominal after their name.

Passing either Level 1 exam (Scotch track or Bourbon track) allows candidates to register for the comprehensive Certified Whiskey Specialist (CWS; Level 2) exam, and they can later proceed to the Master of Scotch (SM, Level 3) and Master of Whiskey (WM, Level 4) levels.

Program and registration information, as well as curriculum overview and sample exam questions, can be found at www.WhiskeyMasters.org.

Beam Suntory Investing $60 Million in Clermont, Reintroducing the James B. Beam Distilling Co – Whisky News

CLERMONT, KY, July 25, 2019 – Today, Beam Suntory is breaking ground on the Fred B. Noe Craft Distillery, which will be the home of future innovation and provide opportunities for education and hospitality. The new distillery is part of a larger $60 million investment to re-establish the James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont, which encompasses the production operations for the flagship Jim Beam® brand, as well as small-batch brands like Booker’s®, Baker’s®, Basil Hayden’s® and Knob Creek®, and next generation brands like Legent™ and Little Book®, and the visitor experience.

Beam Suntory is excited to honor our roots by investing in the James B. The James B. Beam Distilling Co. was the company’s name immediately following Prohibition and will serve as the name of Beam Suntory’s Clermont operations going forward.

The Fred B. Noe Craft Distillery, named for 7th Generation Master Distiller Fred Noe, will serve as the home for small-batch bourbons like Booker’s and Baker’s, the next-generation brand Little Book, created by 8th generation Beam Distiller Freddie Noe, and serve as a functional production facility to explore new fermentation and distillation techniques. Heaven Hill Brands Signs Agreement to Acquire Black Velvet Canadian Whisky – Canadian Whisky News

Heaven Hill Brands Signs Agreement to Acquire Black Velvet Canadian Whisky

Black Velvet is the second-largest selling Canadian Whisky worldwide, named for its velvety smooth taste. The Black Velvet brand fills an important gap in Heaven Hill’s broad distilled spirits portfolio by substantially expanding sales activities in the Imported Whisky category and fits perfectly with its portfolio of high volume, quality brands like Evan Williams Bourbon, Burnett’s Vodka, Deep Eddy Vodka, Admiral Nelson’s Rums, and Christian Brothers Brandies.BARDSTOWN, Ky. – Heaven Hill Brands, the largest independent, family-owned and operated distilled spirits supplier based in the U.S., has signed an agreement to acquire Black Velvet Canadian Whisky, the second-largest selling Canadian whisky in the world, from Constellation Brands Inc. The purchase will be made through a subsidiary of Constellation, The Black Velvet Distilling Company located in Lethbridge, Canada. The sale is expected to close in the second half of 2019, subject to regulatory approval.

“We are excited to add Black Velvet to our iconic group of brands and look forward to growing this historic brand in the months and years ahead,” said Max L. Shapira, President of Heaven Hill Brands. “As we continue to build our business based on strategic acquisitions and innovation, Heaven Hill’s commitment to quality continues to steer the positive outlook for our diverse portfolio.”

In addition to acquiring Black Velvet, Heaven Hill will purchase the historic Black Velvet Distilling facility, one of the eight traditional Canadian distilleries in operation. The acquisition includes all the distilling operations, aging and bottling facilities and the remaining portfolio of Canadian Whisky brands owned by Constellation, which includes Black Velvet, MacNaughton, McMasters, and the international business of the Schenley brands – Golden Wedding and OFC. Canadian Whisky made up 7.3% of total distilled spirits volume in 2018 according to Beverage Information Group, the largest segment of all total Imported Whiskey. The Canadian Whisky category is approximately 16.8 million cases, with Black Velvet volume representing almost two million cases in the U.S. in 2018. Perella Weinberg Partners LP acted as exclusive financial advisor to Heaven Hill Brands with respect to the transaction.

Black Velvet was developed in 1946 and was first introduced to the market in 1951. Brothers Walter and Alfred Gilbey entered the spirits industry in England in 1857. After experiencing tremendous growth, the brothers expanded the business opening their first gin distillery in England in 1872, and eventually expanding to Canada in 1906. Due to high demand in Canada, the brothers built the WA Gilbey Distillery producing the first drops of Canadian Gilbey spirits on September 11, 1933. Distillers Crosbie Hucks and John S. Napier joined the team developing a number of Canadian Whiskies, with Black Velvet rising to the top due to mass consumer interest. The 1970’s brought growth for the Canadian Whisky category and in turn, IDV, now Diageo, built Palliser Distiller in Lethbridge, Alberta. The distillery has since been re-named The Black Velvet Distilling Company where the product is still produced today.

Mortlach 13 Year Old 1997 Silver Seal

Distilleerderij: Mortlach
Regio: Schotland (Speyside)
Fles: Mortlach 13 Year Old 1997/2010 Silver Seal, Sherry Cask #348
Kleur: mahonie
ABV: 60.5%
